I feel like it's extremely rare for me to read about a place on a blog and then accidentally
stumble upon it in real life (I don't do a lot of reading about Rochester while online). But I finally had one such collission.InContention
, my favorite movie blog, recently posted
that the makers of Spike Jonze's upcoming "Where the Wild Things Are" movie had started their own blog, posting images of things that had inspired them. One of InContention's favorite photos was of "a desolate New York ice-cream parlor" which had a "Wild Things" mural painted on the side of it which "illustrates the extent to which Maurice Sendak’s book has permeated everyday life." Silly me, I assumed it was in New York City ... not Ithaca. And I never thought that we'd be passing it on our way out of town along NY RT-89 after camping at Buttermilk Falls State Park for the weekend.
Naturally, we had to stop for a picture.
Brian and Alana are always game for random stops at roadside photo-ops, and it was fun to tell them and Adam "Okay, now look like wild things" and watch as they all struck various poses until the camera's timer finally took the photo. Also mad props to the jewelry store, who now occupies the building, for keeping the mural up, as it's really wonderfully done. Ice cream cone in Max's hand and all.
